The perks are the real reason to hold it, with a free first checked bag on domestic American itineraries and Group 5 boarding for you and up to four companions on the same reservation, which can pay for the fee on a single trip with a small team. Earning is narrower than it looks: the 2x rate applies only to eligible American Airlines purchases, alongside 2x on car rentals, gas, and telecom, cable, and satellite providers, with everything else at 1x. The bonus history is worth watching, since Citi raised it to 75,000 miles in late April and pulled it back to 65,000 about ten days later, so if you are not in a hurry it may be worth waiting to see whether the higher offer returns. The companion certificate reads well but requires $30,000 in purchases each cardmembership year, which most small businesses running this card will not reach.
